Growing a Healthy EDI Initiative to Reduce Costs,
Improve Efficiency, and Prepare for Growth
A major supplier of nursery products and plantings faced challenge threatening to wilt
their sales volume to retailers such as Lowe’s and Wal-Mart. They faced demands from
large customers for superior performance in their supply chain. And, the ability to execute
and respond to EDI- based transactions required full integration with the company’s
business and production systems.
Goals and Concerns
The Company’s IT Manager quickly identified their PC-based EDI software as a major
roadblock to rapid response to customer demands and new business opportunities. He
established a project to reduce costs in day-to-day operations, streamline supply chain
responsiveness and manage future growth.
Implementing this new EDI system would not be an easy task. With over 80 trading
partners and several hundred thousand documents a month, the project team dreaded
the potential for downtime, problems and charge backs during the migration to a new
system. They knew managing the transition without any disruption in service and
response to customers was a top priority.
Software or Services?
Exploring their options, they soon became concerned about the high costs implementing
a traditional, translator based EDI system. In addition to the software, maintenance and
